Post Cataract Surgery Instructions:

1. Eye Shield

  • Wear the clear plastic shield over your eye at bedtime or while sleeping for 5 days

2. Eye Drops

  • Continue using the prescribed eye drops as directed

  • It can be normal for the drops to sting or burn and may feel worse after surgery than before

3. Expected Symptoms

  • Your eye may be red, or feel irritated and gritty (like sand or gravel) for a few days

  • Your vision may be blurred for several days up to weeks

  • You may take Tylenol or Advil for any discomfort, as needed

4. Eye Cleaning & Hygiene

  • If you need to clean your eye, use sterile water that has been boiled and cooled

  • Wash your hands before touching your eye

5. Activities

  • You may watch TV, read, or go for walks / moderate activity after surgery

  • Avoid lifting anything heavier than 30 lbs for 1 week

  • Avoid applying makeup, lotions, or creams around the eye for 1 week

  • Avoid getting soap, shampoo, or water into your eye for 1 week

  • No swimming, hot tubs, weightlifting, or contact sports for 2 weeks

6. Light Sensitivity

  • If you are sensitive to light, wearing sunglasses may help relieve discomfort

7. Glasses

  • You may continue wearing your regular glasses if they help with comfort or vision

  • Your old glasses will not harm the healing eye, but they will not match your new prescription

  • If the glasses feel unbalanced:

    • Remove the lens on the surgical side, or

    • Go without glasses temporarily for comfort

8. Vision Changes & Follow-Up

  • Most patients will not be able to read without glasses after surgery.

  • Distance vision may also remain temporarily blurry

  • Visit your optometrist 4–6 weeks after surgery to update your glasses prescription

  • You may use over-the-counter reading glasses (magnifiers) in the meantime
